The central idea underlying this book is that when speakers act in a social context language acquires a social signature whose details have not yet been fully understood. This book brings together ten studies in conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and syntax in a discussion of three major topics: Interaction and social behavior, Interaction-structuring expressions, and Grammar in interaction.
