David Gerlach graduated from Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, with a teaching degree in English and Biology for secondary schools (2008). After completing his in-service teacher training in Kassel (2011), he returned to Marburg to complete his PhD in foreign language research (2013). He then held positions as a post-doctoral research assistant at the Philipps University of Marburg (2013-2020) and as an interim professor of TEFL at the University of Regensburg (2017-2019), before moving to the University of Wuppertal (2020-). There he is Chair and Full Professor of English Language Education.
David Gerlach has been a visiting lecturer/researcher at the Universities of Jyväskylä and Oulu (Finland), Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, USA) and the University of Nevada (Las Vegas, USA).
Research interests
David Gerlach researches (English) language teachers and language teacher education/professional development, particularly in the context of inclusive and critical language education. He has also been involved in developing professional development opportunities for future teachers to address diversity and critical literacy by implementing task-based language learning. He continues to research basic literacy (in particular reading and writing), learning difficulties (in particular dyslexia), and critical language education.
His work on language teachers is mostly reconstructive in nature (narrative inquiry, documentary method, qualitative content analysis), whereas his work on skills tends to be intervention-based (quantitative pre-/post-test design).
