The Irish Itinerary 2023: Helen Cullen reads from her work
Helen Cullen was born in Ireland and, living near London, often returns to Ireland to write. Her novels explore the complexity of human emotion, from love to grief and are characterised by the author's extraordinary empathy and powers of observation. The author John Boyne described Helen Cullen as “one of Ireland's finest new writers”.
Her debut novel, The Lost Letters of William Woolf, was published in 2018 and was nominated for the Best Newcomer category at the An Post Irish Book Awards in the same year. The novel has also been optioned for television by Mainstreet Pictures. Her second novel, The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually, was published in 2020 and was also enthusiastically received by both readers and the press. In the USA, the novel was published as The Dazzling Truth. Helen Cullen's novels have been translated into many languages, including Italian, Greek, Hebrew and Russian as well as German.
Helen Cullen studied Drama and English Literature and worked at RTÉ (Ireland's national broadcaster) until 2010. She now writes full-time and is a regular contributor to The Irish Times and Sunday Times Magazine. She also teaches Creative Writing at Brunel University London. Helen Cullen will be reading at the SWANE Café (Luisenstraße 102a) on Tuesday, 12 December 2023, 6:30 pm. This event is part of the 'Irish Itinerary' (EFACIS), and will be held in English.
