Irish Itinerary - Jan Carson
Reading with Jan Carson at SWANE Café
As part of the Irish Itinerary 2025, Northern Irish writer Jan Carson will visit Wuppertal and read from her work at the SWANE Café. Since her second novel, The Fire Starters (2019), won the EU Prize for Literature, Jan Carson has established herself as one of Northern Ireland’s most remarkable and influential writers. Her work includes two further novels (Malcolm Orange Disappears, 2014, and The Raptures, 2022), two short story collections (Children’s Children, 2016, and Quickly, While They Still Have Horses, 2024), and two flash fiction anthologies (Postcard Stories 1 & 2, 2017 and 2020). Carson’s fiction blends the magical and the mundane to explore the past, present and future of the Protestant community in Northern Ireland. In the process she raises highly relevant, general questions about the power of narrative(s) to soothe and disturb, to imagine and reimagine personal and national identities, and to build or destroy communities.
Don’t miss the chance to meet one of the most compelling voices in contemporary European literature and join us for a reading with Jan Carson on 7 January 2025, 6:30 pm at SWANE-Café (Luisenstraße 102a).
