Literary and cultural studies, alongside linguistics, are the core subject areas in English and American studies. Literary theories, models and methods, the central epochs, genres and works of British and American literary history, the origin and development of literary forms, as well as approaches from cultural theory and analysis form the core of our curriculum.

English and American literary and cultural studies in Wuppertal are contrastive and comparative: Research and teaching also include a focus on the New English Literatures as well as multicultural literatures of Britain and the USA.
