You have finished and enjoyed your BA in English Literature and Language? And you want to know more? Then our newly designed Master of Arts (MA) “English and American Studies” is where you should be heading.
This research-oriented MA programme is taught jointly by faculty members from the Department of English and American Literature, Culture and Linguistics and the Department of Philosophy at Wuppertal University.
The programme is aimed at those students who are interested in anglophone literatures and/or English linguistics and who wish to acquire a more specialised knowledge of those fields. A primary objective of this programme is to acquaint our MA candidates with the newest approaches and methodologies and with current topics in the literary and cultural or the linguistic domain of English and American studies, thus enabling students to critically assess and to engage themselves in cutting-edge research.
MA students will focus either on linguistics or on literary and cultural studies. In addition to that there is an obligatory interdisciplinary module, which emphasises philosophical groundwork and a reflexive engagement with key concepts shared by linguistics and literary studies. Moreover, in two language practice modules, training will be provided for high-level oral and writing skills especially geared to the needs of academic and professional contexts.
The four-semester programme culminates in the students’ own research project, an MA thesis and its defence in the final semester.
With a MA degree in “English and American Studies” you will have an excellent academic foundation in what is arguably one of the most influential languages, literatures and cultures of the contemporary world. You will be prepared to apply for further research projects in the framework of PhD programmes (for example, within the Wuppertal Centre for Graduate Studies), or ready for a non-university career in fields as wide-ranging as media, science, and business – where your thorough intellectual schooling and methodological, analytical, and communicative competences will stand you in good stead.
Those seeking admission to the MA programme “English and American Studies (Anglistik / Amerikanistik)” must have completed a Bachelor programme in English (or English and American Studies) of no less than six semesters, achieving a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of “gut” (or “B” in the ECTS system). This Bachelor programme must comprise a total of at least 180 ECTS credits, with at least 76 of these credits in the subject area English (including English and American Studies).
At least 30 credits must have been acquired in the subject area of literary and cultural studies (for the option 'literature and culture') or in the subject area of linguistics (for the option 'linguistics').
